ISO/NP 16517 - Sampling and Real-time RT-PCR assay for detection of SARS-CoV-2 in food and food packaging surface

Scope

This standard provides the sampling and real-time RT-PCR assay for detection of SARS-CoV-2 in food
and food packaging surface. It includes detection reagents, instruments and devices, experimental
procedures, analysis results, laboratory biosafety.

The standard is applied to the detection of SARS-CoV-2 on food and food packaging surface, including
the surface of aquatic products (including live aquatic animals), the surface of other animal products,
the surface of plant food, and the surface of internal and external packages.

Purpose

The Corona Virus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) has been erupted worldwide since December of 2019. The transmission routes of COVID-19 are mainly respiratory droplet transmission and contact transmission. Respiratory droplet transmission can be blocked by wearing masks, and direct contact with human body, environment and food become the potential risk of transmission of COVID-19. On January 12, 2020, the World Health Organization officially named the 2019 novel coronavirus SARSCoV- 2. Although SARS-CoV-2 is not a direct food safety issue, nor is it a transmission route that causes respiratory diseases, since last year, China has repeatedly detected SARS-CoV-2 on the surface of food and Chinese customs on the surface of frozen seafood packaging, which indirectly indicates food or food. The surface of the packaging will serve as a carrier for the spread of SARSCoV- 2. Once a carrier of SARS-CoV-2 comes into contact with food or the surface of food, there is a high probability that the viable virus will remain on the surface of the food or food, which will pose a serious threat to the next contact.

There are frequent incidents of contamination of SARS-CoV-2 in frozen foods and outer packaging around the world, but at present, international standards for the sampling and testing of SARS-CoV-2 in food and food packaging have not been established. The introduction of this standard will fill the gap of the international standards for the collection and detection of SARS-CoV-2 in food and food packaging, and form a uniform detection operation procedure for sampling and detection of nucleic acid.
