ISO/NP 4906 "Infant formula and adult nutritionals - Determination of total folates content by trienzyme extraction and ultra performance liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS/MS)"

Scope

This deliverable specifies a method for the analysis of total folates in infant formula and adult nutritionals using trienzyme extraction and LC-MS/MS analysis

Purpose

The Codex standard on infant formula (Codex STAN-72 1981 on INFANT FORMULA AND FORMULAS FOR SPECIAL MEDICAL PURPOSES INTENDED FOR INFANTS), which is the basis for many national regulations, includes folate as part of the essential composition. Currently there is no ISO standard to verify compliance to national regulations for this labelled nutrient. Infant formula and formulas for special medical purposes are probably the most heavily regulated and tested in the world because of the sensitive population it serves.
