ISO/TC 34/SC 5 N1375 ISO/NP 4214 "Milk and milk products - Determination of amino acids in infant formula and other dairy products"

Scope

This deliverable specifies a method for the determination of amino acids (except tryptophan) in infant formula and adult/pediatric nutritional formula using the powder matrices from the current AOAC/SPIFAN kit, milk, milk powder, sweet whey powder, acid whey powder, and caseinate powder. Two cereal matrices (breakfast cereal and soy flour most likely) will be added to the matrix list.

Purpose

Codex standard STAN-72 1981 on INFANT FORMULA AND FORMULAS FOR SPECIAL MEDICAL PURPOSES INTENDED FOR INFANTS is the basis for many national regulations and includes requirements regarding amino acids composition as part of the essential composition. Currently there is no standard to verify compliance to national labelling regulations for this nutrient. Infant formula and formulas for special medical purposes are probably the most heavily regulated and tested in the world because of the sensitive population it serves. It is important for the dairy sector because most infant formula are milk- based and contains dairy ingredients.

ISO, IDF and AOAC have an agreement to develop technically equivalent analytical methods for the determination of micronutrients in infant formula and adult nutritionals. The proposed work item is urgently needed to provide harmonized dispute resolutions methods to verify compliance to regulations and agreed upon specifications in trade. For this reason, the method needs to be submitted to Codex for inclusion the Codex list of Recommended Methods of Analysis and Sampling (CODEX STAN 234).

The method has been granted first action status by AOAC in September 2018. A NWIP has been submitted to IDF as well (currently being discussed within SCAMC). The goal is to submit the method to multi-laboratory testing and develop it as a AOAC/IDF/ISO joint method.
