Pseudomonas aeruginosa infections are of increasing concern in the healthcare environment with cases of hospital acquired Pseudomonas aeruginosa cases rising significantly since surveillance began in 2017.
Th recently published new British Standard BS 8580-2 :2022 “Water quality - Risk assessments for Pseudomonas aeruginosa and other waterborne pathogens. Code of practice” identifies that the risk assessment needs to consider many potential sources and not just the water in distribution.
This proposed standard is needed to advise those carrying out risk assessments in accordance with BS 8580-2 how to sample for Pseudomonas aeruginosa in settings covered in BS 8580-2.
The publication of this standard will also complete the water quality suite of standards.
Currently there is no British standard equivalent for Pseudomonas aeruginosa like we have for Legionella (BS 7592:2022 Sampling for Legionella bacteria in water systems. Code of practice).
The standard intends to also provide advice for sampling of other biofilm associated waterborne pathogens of particular significance in healthcare and leisure premises such as Nontuberculous Mycobacteria.
If you have expertise in this area and wish to contribute to the development of the standard, please provide your input into the proposed scope and express your interest in contributing to the development of the standard.
