Several international organizations of government currently cover biobanking for agriculture and food production. There is a gap between governments and commercial industry regarding this business sector. TC 276/WG 2 has assembled ISO 20387 as an overarching standard covering the general requirements and guidelines for biobanking; however, despite its coverage of plants and animals in research the scope of TC 276 does not cover agriculture and food production. TC 34/SC 16 has examined the potential of leveraging the expertise of TC 276/WG2 in biobanking, the expertise of TC 34 in agriculture and food production and the expertise of TC 34/SC 16 in biomolecular methods of analysis to develop standards for biobanking in agriculture and food production. In resolution 135/19 given at the 9th plenary meeting of TC 34/SC 16 the committee decided to develop via liaison with ISO TC 276, an ISO deliverable for biobanking in agriculture and food production based on ISO 20387. China, the United States and Thailand volunteered for the work on the NWIP. This decision was unanimous.
