BS 7592: 2008 Sampling for Legionella bacteria in water systems. Code of practice

Scope

British Standard gives recommendations and guidance on the sampling of water and related materials for determination of the presence of organisms of the genus Legionella. it is applicable to sampling artificial water systems and also gives methods for sampling of biofilms and sediments that might be present in water systems. Some of the same sampling principles can be applied to natural water systems. the standard is applicable to both sampling for routine monitoring and in outbreak investigations. For the latter, recommendations and guidance on the selection of sampling points are given. the rationale for the selection of sampling points for particular situations is also discussed. this British Standard is intended for use by all those involved in water sampling for legionellae including the persons taking samples on site and their employers.

Purpose

Standardised procedure for water and health and safety industry to follow for sampling in order to test water systems for the presence of Legionella including sample collection handling, transport and preservation. The standard describes the procedures for collecting water and other samples from artificial and other water systems for the purposes of investigating an outbreak of Legionnaires’ disease or of monitoring systems for the control of Legionella bacteria, the cause of Legionnaires’ disease. It will enable the owners of risk systems to sample in compliance with the requirements of current legislation and is applicable to hot and cold water systems , cooling towers and allied equipment, spa pools and any other water system that is identified as a potential risk. All water systems currently recognised as risk systems will be covered in detail and the principals to be applied for all risk systems will be detailed Key benefit and Unique selling point is - Specification of good practice to provide a standard approach throughout the water treatment safety, and health services industries ,for the monitoring and investigation of water systems so improving the prevention of Legionnaires’’ disease.
