124/107/NP , PNW 124-107: Wearable electronic devices and technologies - Part 402-3: Performance measurement method of fitness wearables - Heart Rate Monitoring

Scope

This part of IEC 63203 specifies terms and measurement methods for heart rate of wrist watches or smart bands having a photoplethysmography sensor. The object of this document is to define and provide the standard test methods to evaluate the accuracy of wearable devices with heart rate monitoring based on photoplethysmogram and accuracy of human heart rate measured by wearable devices with heart rate monitoring based on photoplethysmogram. This standard test method is limited to wrist worn wearables and not intended to evaluate the medical relevance of heart rate monitoring wearable devices.

Purpose

INCLUDING THE MARKET RELEVANCE AND WHETHER IT IS PROPOSED TO BE A HORIZONTAL STANDARD.

MARKET RELEVANCE SHOULD BE ADDRESSED BY INDICATING THE NEED FOR THE CORRESPONDING STANDARDS WORK AND ITS GLOBAL RELEVANCE (SEE ISO/IEC DIRECTIVES, PART 1 ANNEX C)

IF PROPOSED AS A HORIZONTAL STANDARD, IDENTIFY AS POSSIBLE, THE CORRESPONDING APPLICABLE GUIDE(S) AND ASSOCIATED ADVISORY COMMITTEE(S) (SEE GUIDE 108).

The heart circulates oxygen and nutrient-rich blood throughout our body. When it's not working properly, every physical conditions are affected. The function of the heart, cardiac output, is directly related to heart rate and stroke volume. A heart rate monitor can function as a health tool. We can use it to see how our body reacts to stressful situations and heart rate monitoring is necessary to safely and effectively control the intensity of a workout to improve our fitness. Considering convenience and comfort, wrist type wearable devices relying on photoplethysmogram (PPG) are mainstreams on the market. However, they are not as accurate as wearable devices relying on electrocardiogram. Therefore, standardization for heart rate measurement accuracy can provide the reliability and significantly increase the usefulness of wrist type wearable devices with the PPG function.
