ISO/TC 293 N 112, ISO/NP 5052 Control of cross contamination in feed producing lines - Guidelines

Scope

This international standard specifies guidelines to reduce the risk of cross-contamination in compound feed which is mainly related to un-intended inducing of materials such as veterinary drugs, feed additives and feed ingredients from a batch to another one in feed producing mills.

Note 1 This guideline covers the risks related to cross contamination of feed on both animal health and the risk of residues in animal products respect to consumers.

Note 2 Cross contamination may occur in single feed machine, processing systems and complete production line.

Note 3 This standard does not cover microbial cross contamination.

Purpose

Global compound feed production is estimated more than 1.1 billion tonnes annually. In feed mills, different kind of feeds (maybe contains veterinary drugs, additives and special materials) are manufactured for target animals in same processing line. Cross contamination means that those materials may induce to other feed that possibly is not appropriate for other animals. For instance research in 21 feed mills and 140 of flushing feeds in 2013 demonstrate 87% of all samples contain concentrations of antibiotics in the range of 0.1-154 mg/kg.

Design of feed processing line, technological quality of equipment, properties of materials, manufacturing situation e.g. preventive actions, maintenance and clean out procedures can influence the degree of residue and cross contamination.

Appropriate actions should be carried out to solve of un-intended inducing these materials from one batch feed to next one. These actions help to protect users from this kind of contamination. This standard provides guidelines to control of cross-contamination in feed processing lines.
