Scope

This standard specifies the definition, classification, code, requirements, test methods, inspection rules, labels, packaging, transportation, storage and quality certificates of recycled Nd-Fe-B sintered permanent magnets.

This standard is applicable to recycled Nd-Fe-B sintered permanent magnets produced by short-loop method with recyclable bulk Nd-Fe-B sintered magnet resources from post-consuming wastes and post-industrial wastes.

Purpose

Recently, recycling of rare earth from waste materials, especially with waste neodymium iron boron (Nd-Fe-B) permanent magnets, has drawn increasing attention around the world. Among the waste NdFe-B permanent magnets, recyclable bulk Nd-Fe-B sintered permanent magnets from both postconsuming wastes and post-industrial wastes are important for their unique feature that they still retain their original chemical composition and magnetic properties. As a result, the recyclable bulk Nd-Fe-B sintered permanent magnets can be produced into the recycled sintered Nd-Fe-B magnets directly by short-loop method based on the powder metallurgy technique, i.e., a “magnet to magnet” method without long-loop hydrometallurgical route. Moreover, such powder metallurgy has become the only industrialized short-loop method for recycling bulk Nd-Fe-B sintered magnet wastes, and it had been used to recycle the magnet wastes at mass production level in the many companies in Japan, China, The UK, The USA, and in some European countries, etc. However, specifications for the recycled magnets have not published yet. Therefore, it is needed to set up a new standard to support the rare earth recycling and global trading of recycled magnets.
