Scope

CMI/1 Critical Minerals and Materials

Under the direction of the Standards Policy and Strategy Committee, CMI/1 is responsible for the development and maintenance of critical minerals and materials standards and providing the UK input to international (ISO/TC 298, ISO/TC 333, ISO/TC 345) and European (CEN/TC 472, CEN/TC 477) standardization technical committees in the field of critical minerals and associated materials. This includes, but is not limited to, rare earth elements, lithium, specialty metals and minerals, and other critical minerals as appropriate. The committee covers terminology, classification, sampling, testing and analysis methods, material specifications, sustainability, traceability, recycling, carbon footprint assessment, and the mining, extraction, processing and conversion of critical minerals into useful compounds and materials.

Activities relating to finished products and end-use applications are excluded.

Purpose

Based on the current work programmes, scopes and memberships of the three committees, there is a strong case for merging REI/1 Rare Earths, LII/1 Lithium, and SMI/1 Speciality Metals and Minerals into a broader and centralised CMI/1 Critical Minerals and Materials committee.

The proposed CMI/1 Critical Minerals and Materials committee would bring together approximately 20-25 organizations representing government, mining, refining, testing, manufacturing, academia and sustainability expertise.

The resulting committee would provide a significantly broader and more resilient stakeholder base than the existing committees, improve coordination across the critical minerals value chain, and create opportunities to attract additional participation from strategic sectors such as battery manufacturing, recycling, defence and advanced materials.
