Scope

This part of IEC 62629 specifies the standard measurement methods and measurement conditions for determining visible resolution and monochromatic speckle contrast of holographic displays. This document applies to viewing-window type holographic displays.

Purpose

Holographic displays are emerging as a key next -generation 3D display technology for diverse applications, including augmented/virtual reality (AR/VR) spatial computing, automotive head -up displays (HUDs), electronic entertainment, and medical visualization. Unlike conventional 3D technologies, holographic displays recreate exact optical wavefields, offering realistic depth perception without visual fatigue.

Key optical components such as Spatial Light Modulators (SLMs), diffractive optical elements, and light source modules critically determine the reconstructed image quality. However, structural and material variations lead to significant differences in key characteristics, such as visible resolution and speckle contrast. Currently, no internationally standardized measurement methods exist to evaluate these parameters for holographic display systems and their optical elements.
