This document presents the technical issues related to the inspection of Lightning Protection Systems (LPS) and Surge Protection Measures (SPM) in buildings/structures, including the classification, the methods, the instruments, the frequency and the format of the report of inspection. The inspection requirements of LPS and SPM shall be in compliance with IEC 62305 other documents and especially IEC 62305-3 and IEC 62305-4.
All types of buildings/structures consist of lightning protection system (LPS) such as air-termination systems, down-conductor systems, earth-termination systems as the external LPS as well as the lightning equipotential bonding and separation system as the internal LPS. The buildings/structures also collaboratively equipped with surge protection measures (SPM) including earthing and bonding network, magnetic shielding and line routing, coordinated surge protective devices (SPD) and isolating interface. Such LPS and SPM are highly correlated with the protection requirements of diverting the lightning current, mitigating the impacts of lightning electromagnetic pulses (LEMP), eliminating potential differences and limiting transient overvoltages. This technical specification is intended to list standardized technical issues for the LPS and SPM inspection of buildings/structures, which is not detailly and fully covered by TC81 standards up to now. With the upcoming evolution of IEC 62305-3 and IEC 62305-4 (edition 4), this TS may either be integrated in both standards or remain an independent document.
