Scope

This International Standard applies to switching devices for household and similar uses, primarily intended to be used for energy efficiency (EE) purposes, for prosumer’s electrical installations electrical installations (PEI).

These switching devices are part of the fixed electrical installation.

This document applies to switching devices for operation in AC single or multiphase main circuits with rated voltages not exceeding 440 V AC, frequencies of 50 Hz, 60 Hz or 50/60 Hz. They are intended to be used in installations with prospective short circ uit currents not exceeding 25 000 A. DC operations are not covered by this edition and are kept under consideration for a future revision of this document.

These switching devices are intended for use in circuits where protection against electrical shock and overcurrent is provided according to installation rules for low voltage electrical installations, unless the switching devices already contain such protective function.

These switching devices are normally installed by instructed persons (IEC 60050 -195:2021, 195-04-02) or skilled persons (IEC 60050-195:2021, 195-04-01). They are normally used by ordinary persons (IEC 60005- 195:2021, 195-04-03) and do not require maintenance.

The requirements of this document apply for standard environmental conditions. They are applicable to switching devices intended for use in an environment with pollution degree 2 and overvoltage categories III according to IEC 60664-1. These switching devices have at least a degree of protection IP 20 according to IEC 60529. Additional requirements can be necessary for devices used in locations having more severe environmental conditions.

These switching devices do not, by their nature, provide any overcurrent protection function.

Purpose

IEC 60364-8-82 defines the operation of prosumer’s electrical installations (PEI) compatible with both current and future methods for safely and effectively delivering electrical energy to current using equipment, regardless of whether :

– the energy comes from Distribution System Operator (DSO), local generation or local storage, or

– the electrical installation is connected to a distribution network or islanded.

This document is the general part of the product family standard IEC 63402 -4 series which define the functions and requirements of devices for prosumer’s electrical installations (PEI devices) that contribute to the correct and safe operation of grid connected PEI and islandable PEI for energy efficiency purposes.

PEI devices are usually controlled by an energy manager as defined in IEC 63402 -3 (under development) and supposed to be part of a complete energy management system as defined in IEC 63402 -1.

This document recognizes the internationally accepted level of protection against hazards such as electrical, mechanical, thermal, fire and radiation when the PEI devices are operated in normal conditions taking into consideration manufacturer's instructio ns for installation and operation. It also covers abnormal situations that can be expected in practice.

If the intended application of a device is covered by different subparts of the IEC 63402 -4 series of standards, all relevant parts are to be applied.

This document is only to be applied together with the latest edition of one or more of the subsequent parts of the IEC 63402-4 series of standards.

PEI devices containing additional features or functions not addressed in this document and the relevant subsequent part(s) can require additional consideration and tests to ensure its main function is not adversely affected and no hazards can arise from th ese additional features or functions. If IEC standards exist to cover such functions, they are to be applied.
