This standard gives the general terminology used in the fundamental concepts of Virtual, Augmented and Mixed Realities (VRARMR) in electronic technologies and systems, as well as general terms pertaining to specific applications and associated technologies.
This terminology is consistent with the terminology developed in the other specialized parts of the IEV.
The VR/AR/MR market has been growing rapidly in recent years, driven by expanding applications across various industries. This rapid expansion has led to increasing complexity and inconsistency in terminology, which would hinder effective communication and interoperability among stakeholders. Therefore, the establishment of internationally harmonized terminology is essential to support market development, standardization activities, and global collaboration. TC 100 and TC 110 established JWG 21 to develop d efinitions of terms commonly used by both TC 100 and TC 110, focusing on the areas of VR, AR and MR, to be submitted to the IEV. JWG 21 prepared this draft for terms with higher-level concepts that encompass the entirety of the respective specific terms, which will serve as the basis for multimedia-specific terms and display-specific terms in the future.
Regarding the numbering, xxx-01 is intended for "Fundamental concepts", which are not limited to VR/AR/MR, and larger Section numbers are intended for specific terms (e.g., multimedia -specific terms, display-specific terms, etc.), as follows:
Subject field: Electronic technologies and systems Section number
-01: Fundamental concepts (future work)
-02: Fundamental concepts of Virtual, Augmented and Mixed Realities (this proposal)
In the future, specific terms relating to multimedia or electronic displays will be developed in other Sections. The IEV number will be decided by TC 1 through the process for allocating new IEV part numbers.
