Scope

The scope of BS 3987:1991 is to be revised to limit its applicability to anodic oxidation coatings produced using sulfuric acid anodizing processes, thereby reflecting current established practice for external architectural applications, and to exclude small architectural accessories so that the standard clearly applies to components used in major external architectural assemblies. The revision also includes the replacement of outdated referenced standards with those that have superseded them, together with the identification of normative references, the alignment of the terms and definitions with a BS ISO standard, and the introduction of an acceptance criterion for determining the comparative fastness to ultraviolet light and heat of coloured anodic oxidation coatings. In addition, the scope will be clarified in relation to the conditions under which the microscopy method may be used to assess compliance with coating thickness requirements, the particular method to be used for the mass-loss test for sealing quality, as well as the cold impregnation methods permitted for sealing anodic coatings in architectural applications. Finally, the status of the appendices will be clearly defined, distinguishing between normative and informative content to improve clarity and usability of the standard.

Purpose

The purpose of this revision is to update BS 3987:1991 to ensure that it remains technically valid, aligned with current industry practice, and consistent with up to date British, European and International Standards.

The revision is necessary to address the significant number of referenced standards that have been superseded and to ensure that current test methods for key performance characteristics, such as sealing quality, abrasion resistance and resistance to ultraviolet light and heat, are correctly reflected.

In addition, the revision aims to clarify the technical scope and application of the standard by limiting it to anodic oxidation coatings produced using sulfuric acid processes, reflecting established practice for external architectural applications, and by excluding small architectural accessories where the requirements may not be appropriate.

The update will also introduce clearer and more consistent performance requirements, including the definition of acceptance criteria where these are currently missing or ambiguous, and provide clarification on specific technical aspects such as the use of microscopy for coating thickness measurement and acceptable cold impregnation sealing methods.

Furthermore, the revision seeks to improve the clarity, usability and structure of the document by distinguishing between normative requirements and informative guidance, including the status of appendices, and by aligning the drafting of the standard with current BS practices.

Overall, the revision will ensure that the standard continues to support reliable specification, testing and quality control of anodized aluminium coatings for external architectural use.

Key proposed changes:

- Update and clarification of test methods for key performance characteristics, including ultraviolet light and heat resistance, sealing quality and abrasion resistance.

- Introduction and clarification of performance criteria for ultraviolet light and heat resistance of coloured anodic oxidation coatings.

- Revision of sealing quality requirements and associated acceptance criteria in line with current BS EN ISO methods.

- Update of abrasion resistance requirements and removal of obsolete provisions.

- Clarification and alignment of coating assessment and referee test methods with current standards.

- Update of sampling procedures and quality control provisions in accordance with current ISO sampling standards.

- General editorial and technical updates, including removal of obsolete references and alignment with current standards practice.

- Replacement of outdated referenced standards with current BS EN ISO and ISO standards, with clear identification of normative and bibliographic references.
