Scope

This document systematizes general terms and definitions related to haptics and, by ensuring the compatibility and consistency of these terms, aims to facilitate the smooth and efficient progress of future standardization efforts in this field.

- choose various classifications in the field of haptics

- Describe terms and definitions with categorizing by the classifications.

- Include information about terms still during academic debate as reference.

Purpose

Haptics is a relatively new technology that is still undergoing technical innovation, and as such, it often requires academic terminology related to ergonomics. Many terms are still under academic debate and have not yet been finalized.

To facilitate the standardizations of Haptics in a more concise and smooth manner, the next step after the TR and TS (overview, analysis, and classification descriptors of the field) related to Haptics that have been standardized as work items about haptics is to establish common terms and their definitions.

The use of inconsistent terminology hinders accurate understanding of specifications and performance described in the specifications, and this is expected to be one solution to that problem for the industry.
