Scope

This document covers cold-rolled carbon steel sheet for appliances requiring structural, commercial, or drawing quality—where surface finish and chemical composition are critical.

Purpose

The materials used to manufacture the exterior panels or other structural components of appliances (white goods) include cold-rolled carbon steel sheet, zinc-coated carbon steel sheet, and prepainted steel sheet, among others. Cold-rolled carbon steel sheet accounts for up to 70% of these materials. This product plays a significant role in the foreign trade of many countries. However, to date, no internationally harmonized standards exist for stakeholders to reference. Within ISO/TC 17/SC 12 “Steel/Continuous mill flat-rolled products”, several standards address“cold-rolled carbon steel sheet”, however, their technical requirements are not specific to appliances, and their stated applications exclude appliances. For example, ISO 3574 specifies requirements for cold-rolled carbon steel sheets intended for automotive parts, featuring lower carbon content compared with other cold-reduced carbon steel sheet standards. Therefore, this standard proposes to establish international coherence for“coldreduced carbon steel sheet for appliances”, thereby meeting market needs and enabling the incorporation of innovative technologies, promoting and standardizing the production and extensive international trade in the world.
