Scope

This management system standard will provide requirements with guidance for use for travel service providers for establishing, maintaining, implementing and continually improving the provision of travel service activities and related risk management within the context of its organization. It will complement the guidance in ISO 31030 – travel risk management.

It recognises that Travel Risk Management is a multi-faceted, cross-functional discipline and that travel service providers also have additional responsibilities to their clients, who require evidence-based assurances, including governance, compliance, risk management, business continuity, business resilience, guest welfare and safeguarding (including youth and vulnerable people), physical security and cybersecurity (including AI), vendor management, anti-bribery and corruption and more.

It will support existing management system frameworks implemented by travel service providers.

It is intended for use by all types and sizes of organizations providing travel, security and assistance services to organizations and travellers.

Note: As part of the Preliminary Work to investigate the viability of this proposal, BSI has consulted widely with relevant stakeholders and reviewed relevant standards, including ISO 31030. (Please see Justification Study). While no suggestions for change to the guidance were identified, should this proposal be approved, any suggestions for changes to the guidance will be recorded and fed into any future revision of ISO 31030.

Should this proposal be approved, BSI would continue to engage with these groups, and others, to develop the standard. BSI would also seek to establish Twinning arrangements.

Purpose

The basic principles and framework for travel risk management (TRM) are provided in ISO31030. This standard has focussed sector interest on TRM and is regularly featured at events, webinars, workshops globally. While this good practice and expertise is welcomed by travel service providers there is a demand for certification of service providers by organizations and the service providers themselves to provide assurance and demonstrate that the providers have affective and robust processes and solutions in place.

The need for a requirements standard with guidance for use on TRM for service providers arises from the increasing complexity of global travel and the associated risks to individuals and organizations. This proposal aims to help mitigate these risks, enhance safety, and provide a structured approach for managing the various challenges that arise when workers travel for business. The standard will clarify the responsibilities, behaviours, support systems and processes needed to protect and promote the safety, health and wellbeing of workers (and the resilience and preparedness of their parent organizations) while they are in the care of a travel service provider.

Some examples of service providers, include:

• accommodation providers – including hotels, serviced apartments, private home-stays, company owned / leased properties

• ground transport providers – including car-hire, taxis, private-hire, chauffeurs, and coaches airlines, rail and ferry companies

• airports, rail stations and ports

• booking companies – TMCs (Travel Management Companies), DMCs (Destination Management Companies), booking agents, booking platforms (Technology Service Providers), event management companies and tour operators

• TRM Technologies, such as traveller tracking, incident management, online booking tools and profile management

• assistance and Security, such as medical assistance, incident response, evacuation, travel risk management support, insurance

This proposed standard will provide requirements for travel service providers to follow as it serves its customers and works with its supply chain to protects travellers from travel-related risk.

Examples of topics to be included are:

• terminology

• duty-of-care

• health and safety

• security

• supply chain management
