Scope

This European Standard describes a procedure for the determination of anionic arsenic species in foodstuffs by anion-exchange HPLC-ICP-MS following waterbath extraction.

Purpose

This project proposal continues the work on this topic after a similar project, which was intended to replace EN 16802:2016, was discontinued. It will adapt the timeline from the previous project and not replace EN 16802:2016. By maintaining EN 16802:2016 and writing the new standard as EN 16802-2, users with less experience or limited equipment can continue to utilize EN 16802:2016 for inorganic arsenic determination only (still a relevant method).

Development of a standard for the determination of the methylated arsenic species monomethylarsonic acid (MMA) and dimethylarsinic acid (DMA) in foodstuffs by anionexchange HPLC-ICP-MS. The well established EN 16802 will be supplemented with a new part including the new arsenic species and further matrices e.g. insects.

The establishment of standardised methods of analysis is of utmost importance to guarantee a uniform application and control of the European legislation in all Member States and to guarantee a high degree of food safety.

The European Commission granted CEN/TC 275 funding for the development of this project.
