Scope

This part of ISO/IEC 30161 specifies the following items for remote control and monitoring in the IoT data exchange platform (IoT DEP):

- Requirements;

- System configuration;

- Definitions of functional blocks.

Purpose

 IoT services have been deployed in various fields. For instance, recently, remote control and monitoring services using robotics applications are attractive. These services invoke the horizontal approach based on some IoT platforms to reduce CAPEX and OPE X.

 IoT platform has been discussed in ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC 41. In particular, the ISO/IEC 21823 series has specified requirements and frameworks from an interoperability perspective. In this series, ISO/IEC 21823-2 has focused on transport interoperability, incl uding networking connectivity.

 In networking technologies for IoT platforms, a three -layer structure is defined as the information transport capability, the Internet capability, and the information access capability. In the information transport capability, various wired and wireless n etworks are applied. i.e., All Photonics Networks (APN) and 5G/6G mobile networks. In the Internet capability, IP reachability is provided using legacy Internet technologies.

 On the other hand, lightweight processing with small traffic volume should be required for information access capability. For instance, name-based communication using Information Centric Network (ICN) technologies is one promising solution.

 From a standardization point of view, the ISO/IEC 30161 series entitled IoT Data Exchange Platform (IoT DEP) discussed in ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC 41 provides the platform for the information access capability using ICN over the Internet. It intends to mitigate c ommunication overhead and to reduce traffic volume.

 This series aligns ISO/IEC 30141, i.e., IoT reference architecture specified in ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC 41, and provides a breakdown of ISO/IEC 21823 -2 regarding the information access capability. ISO/IEC 30161-1 specifies requirements of this platform, the fram ework, and functional definitions of components. ISO/IEC 30161-2 specifies requirements for large-scale deployment consisting of multiple nodal points. These documents were published in 2020 and 2022 as international standards, respectively. These standards have covered generic IoT services.

 However, as previously described, remote control and monitoring services have been highlighted recently. It was proposed in ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC 41 that remarkable requirements and functional definitions for these services should be specified and added as a se quel to the ISO/IEC 30161 series.

 Therefore, the Preliminary Working Item (PWI) was approved as resolution #549 in the ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC 41 plenary meeting held in November 2024 for this purpose. Through discussion in this PWI activity reported in SC41WG4N245, it is concluded that the new standard should be named ISO/IEC 30161- 3 provisionally. It includes typical requirements for remote control and monitoring services, essential components in IoT DEP, and operations.

 This NP form proposes the start of the project on ISO/IEC 30161 -3. ISO/IEC 30161-3 contributes to the economic deployment of remote control and monitoring IoT services, focusing on industry fields.
