Scope

This British Standard defines the rules to be applied for symbolic representation of welded joints in thermoplastics moulded components on technical drawings, using the following welding processes:

• Ultrasonic welding (including spot welding);
• Vibration welding (linear and orbital);
• Spin welding;
• Hot plate welding;
• Infrared welding;
• Laser welding;
• Hot gas convection welding.

The symbols shown in this document can be combined with other symbols used on technical drawings, for example to show surface finish requirements.

Purpose

In order to ensure that the quality and consistency of the joining process for a thermoplastic moulded component are maintained from initial samples through to mass production, it is necessary to define the process and the joint requirements. This shall be achieved through the formal customer-supplier agreement, such as the technical product documentation (TPD) and/or the technical product specification (TPS), which can include 2D drawings or 3D CAD data, such as to BS ISO 16792.

This standard defines the rules to be applied for symbolic representation of thermal joining processes for polymer components, in TPSs and TPDs. This can include information about the joining process, geometry and quality of the joint. The standard is intended to be applied for the equivalent purpose as BS EN ISO 2553, for metallic welded joints.
