Scope

This document provides requirements and guidelines for the design and implementation of electronic labels for a wide range of products. The document covers the design principles, technical specifications, and implementation guidelines for electronic labels, including but not limited to those used in consumer goods, industrial products, and medical devices.

The scope of this document for electronic labels the following:

1. The document provides requirements and guidance for encapsulating product data and providing that information electronically.

2. The document provides specifications for electronic labelling.

3. The document provides requirements and guidance on how to integrate electronic labels into products.

Electronic labelling is intended for use by consumers, manufacturers, designers, and authorities having jurisdiction. This document does not prescribe the content of the electronic label. The document is designed to promote the use of consistent and effect ive electronic labelling practices across a broad range of sectors and products.

An electronic label is intended to be machine readable. The electronic label has information embedded in it or is a pointer to the electronic storage location or combination of both and can take the form of QR code; Barcode; Multiple symbology; data matrix . This can also be information embedded in the equipment accessed through the equipment or remotely.

Purpose

The purpose of this standard is to facilitate the alignment and coordination of various ongoing initiatives related to electronic labelling in many different sectors and in many regions, and to ensure that electronic labels meet the needs of users, manufac turers, designers, and authorities having jurisdictions. The standard provides guidelines for the design principles, technical specifications, and implementation guidelines for electronic labels, and describes the relevant product information that is electronically available.

The use of electronic labelling has become increasingly important due to the growth of e -commerce and the need for accurate product information to be easily accessible by consumers. However, the lack of a common standard has led to confusion and inconsiste ncy in the design and implementation of electronic labels across different industries and jurisdictions.

The proposed IEC Standard for Consistent and Effective Electronic Labelling Across Industries is a horizontal standard that can be used across industries to promote the use of consistent and effective electronic labelling practices. The standard is intende d for use by consumers, manufacturers, designers, and authorities having jurisdictions for products, and provides a common language and framework for the design, implementation, and use of electronic labels.

Overall, the proposed standard is a necessary and important step towards ensuring that electronic labels are consistent, effective, and meet the needs of users, manufacturers, designers, and authorities having jurisdictions across a wide range of industrie s.
