ISO/NP 23090-38 Information technology — Coded representation of immersive media — Part 38: Enhanced geometry-based point cloud compression

Scope

This project will define bitstream syntax and semantics of encoded Point clouds, and decoding procedure to reconstruct Point clouds.

Purpose

Point clouds are collections of 3D points that represent the surface of objects or scenes, commonly used in applications like augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), autonomous driving, and medical imaging. This type of media often has a large data volume because it captures detailed spatial information along with multiple attributes depicting the visual appearance of objects and scenes, making it challenging to store and transmit. Point cloud compression addresses the market’s need for efficient transmission, storage, and interoperability of 3D point cloud data. The Geometry-based Point Cloud Compression (G-PCC) standard, published in March 2023, provides substantial compression performance for encoding point cloud content. However, G-PCC lacks inter-coding tools to efficiently compress dynamic point cloud sequences. Additionally, functionality for coding large-scale point cloud maps with fine-granularity scalability is missing. These concerns led to the introduction of the Enhanced G-PCC standard.
