Overview: MPEG & JPEG are ISO/IEC standardization groups that have enabled huge markets to flourish through their standards. MP3 revolutionized the way music is distributed and enjoyed. MPEG-2 enabled the digital television industry to replace analogue TV, and has facilitated the expansion of satellite and Cable TV. MPEG-4 AVC and HEVC have also enabled large scale interactive media distribution. The ISO file format family (.mp4) has enabled interoperable exchange of media files, while MPEG DASH powers the adaptive and optimized distribution of interactive media. JPEG is the most common image format used by digital cameras. In its almost 30 years of existence, MPEG & JPEG has gathered an increasing number of the world’s best experts in media technologies and accessed the best and most recent R&D results. Through an extremely thorough and competitive process, MPEG & JPEG have created widely deployed, Tech Emmy awarded, cross-industry standards that have enabled industries to converge. Under the direction of SPSC, IST/37 represents the UK in the work of ISO/IEC JTC1/SC 29 which develops standards for MPEG & JPEG, acting as UK mirror for it and its WGs/AGs, coordinating input and disseminating output. It ensures UK interests are fully represented and are influential within SC 29 work, formulating a UK strategy for standardization related to SC 29 through a broad consultation with relevant stakeholders.
