Scope

This document provides a comprehensive framework for classification and terminologies specific to laser surface treatment technologies and related coatings.

By consolidating various technical aspects of laser surface treatment processes, this document aims to ensure reliability across multiple applications, thereby elevating product standards and achieving performance uniformity.

This document does not apply to the classification of laser-related equipment or laser properties

Purpose

Laser surface treatment employs high-powered laser beams to non-contact heat and process material surfaces, thereby enhancing the materials' mechanical, physical, and chemical properties to improve performance and extend service life. This document aims to establish a unified terminology and classification system for laser surface treatment technologies and related coatings, which covers a wide range of applications, including laser cladding, laser surface hardening, laser remelting, laser alloying, laser nitriding/oxidizing/carburizing, laser-enhanced surface modification with multi-energy fields, laser surface texturing, laser cleaning, and laser additive manufacturing. By defining clear terms and categories, this standard provides a common technical framework for researchers, engineers, and practitioners globally, ensuring the correct interpretation and application of the technology. This document consolidates various technical aspects of laser surface treatment, including procedural parameters and material characteristics, under a uniform standard. This effort is expected to streamline the technology's adoption and application across different sectors, enhancing its accessibility and reproducibility. By setting global benchmarks for laser surface treatment processes, the standard aims to ensure reliability across multiple applications, thereby elevating product standards and achieving performance uniformity.
