ISO/PWI TS 24292 Health informatics — Dental Data for Exchange

Scope

This document is proposed to explore the international possibilities available for the structure of dental data concepts for exchange and to develop a TS with recommendations regarding both what data should be exchanged internationally and what format should be used for the data elements in that data exchange. The TS will detail the data structure for the electronic dental record data elements to be exchanged (“the what”) and will not detail the method used for the actual exchange (“the how”).

Purpose

As digitization of dental patient records has progressed, there is a growing need to exchange electronic information internationally among dental providers for patients transitioning from one practice to another, for referral to dental specialists for consultation and treatment, and for research projects. Examples of data for exchange include administrative data, such as patient name and provider information, clinical findings, treatment data, image files, medications, allergies, and progress notes. Such data exchange could also support research using the shared data. Currently, there are no international recommendations for such exchanges for dental practice. This PWI is a proposal for a TS to develop recommendations regarding what digital dental information could be exchanged internationally among electronic dental records and the format for the data elements that support that data exchange. The goal of the dental data exchange is syntactic and semantic interoperability for electronic dental record data. The standardized data exchanged may also be aggregated and used for analytics and research.
