This methodology can be used to characterize site, calculate input and output energy, and calculate performance.
The scope of the technical specification includes methodologies and procedures for evaluating the output performance of offshore, onshore, and shelf-based OTECs based on the closed type OTEC. In the case of open and hybrid types, it can be used in the electric output part. It does not include OTEC resource assessment, forms of energy other than electrical output, power quality, environmental issues, or scaling of results.
OTEC is the marine renewable energy system that produces electricity by using the temperature difference between surface and deep seawater. Performance as a renewable energy source can be expressed as the ratio of the electrical energy produced to the incident energy to the device. By evaluating the performance of renewable energy devices through consistent procedures and guiding reporting methods, we aim to secure objectivity and reliability, reduce costs, and promote commercialization.
Although there is a general consensus in academia regarding methods and parameters for evaluating OTEC performance, clear procedures and methods have not yet been discussed. This makes it difficult to evaluate the performance of OTEC, making it difficult for the industry to calculate technical or economic feasibility or requiring many assumptions. As such, this standard is necessary to promote industry's entry into and formation of the marine energy market.
