The purpose of the document is to support the harmonization of practices across CEN members for the maintenance of portable fire extinguishers.
Portable fire extinguishers fulfil an important role in the protective measures taken by organisations. They are primarily intended to extinguish a fire in an early stage of its development. With their immediate availability and ease of operation by one person, they enable a quick initiation of firefighting actions.
The effectiveness of portable fire extinguishers is not only determined by the design and functional characteristics of the product itself, but equally important are the selection, installation, marking, user training, regular visual inspection, and periodic maintenance of the portable fire extinguisher.
