This document specifies terminologies and definitions related to VR/AR/MR technology to promote the global harmonization of extended reality technology.
This document does not address terminology outside of the scope of TC 100.
The term XR is used as a general term for virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), and mixed reality (MR) technologies, and XR devices are also considered as essential devices for the implementation of the so-called metaverse.
According to a market survey research, global XR device shipments are expected to increase from 11 million units in 2021 to 105 million units in 2025. The market size is also expected to grow from about $6.9 billion in 2022 to $20 billion in 2027.
However, it is also true that there is difficulty in using appropriate terms when discussing related technologies because the definition of terms for XR has not yet been standardized.
A working group (WG 1) promoting the standardization of VR/AR/MR terminals was established under TC 100 TA 1. We hope that it will be a timely attempt to propose an International Standard for the definition of XR terminology.
