PNW 82-2154 ED1: Solar Trackers - Requirements for the Protection of Personnel

Scope

This international standard specifies general personnel safety requirements for photovoltaic (PV) solar trackers to protect persons from injury when working on or near the trackers. This standard is applicable to horizontal, single axis trackers used in large ground mounted utility-scale installations as defined in IEC TS 62738. Many of the requirements of this standard may also be applicable to small installations and other tracker configurations such as dual-axis photovoltaic and solar thermal trackers but these should be evaluated on a case-by-case basis.

Purpose

This standard is intended to minimize risk of personal injury to personnel due to electrical, mechanical, fire (caused by tracker components), stored energy (e.g. batteries), and operational hazards during the operation installation, commissioning, and maintenance of trackers (after the site is commissioned). Risk of property damage duringHazards associated with high wind conditions are not within the scope of this document and will be addressed in future revisions of IEC 62817, Design Qualification of Solar Trackers. This standard provides minimum design and verification test requirements. These requirements are intended to address risk factors associated with environmental conditions, operational states (including stow functions), unexpected electrical conditions, communication and software failures, accessibility to live and moving parts, heating effects, and mechanical resistance, among others. Compliance with Tthe requirements of this standard are not a substitute for compliance with local, regional, or national codes, as applicable. A tracker compliant with this standard is also expected to be compliant to the requirements of IEC 62817. The verification tests of this standard may are intended to be coordinated with the test requirements of IEC 62817, Design Qualification of Solar Trackers in which case it may be possible to reduce the number of tests and tracker samples needed for safety and performance evaluations.so that a minimum set of tracker samples may be used for both safety and performance evaluations.
