ISO/NP 20466 - Guidance for performance grading of recovered RO membranes for water reuse

Scope

This document defines terms related to recovered RO (Reverse Osmosis) membranes and provides a guidance for grading of their performance for water reuse except potable use. This standard applies to all types and sizes of recovered RO membranes and is encouraged to ensure consistency in the performance of recovered RO membrane.

Purpose

RO (Reverse Osmosis) membranes have been used in various applications such as seawater desalination, ultrapure water and demineralized water production, wastewater treatment, and tertiary treatment of sewage reuse, etc. However the performance of RO membranes gradually declines due to aging and membrane fouling caused by long term use. At present, used RO membranes are disposed of as to consumables after several years of use.

If used RO membranes are recovered by appropriate process such as chemical cleaning, they can be reused for various applications in the water reuse process and their cost is lower than that of new membranes.

Such low cost membranes are especially required for reuse of treated sewage and wastewater for irrigation water and cooling water etc.. If used membrane is graded based on its performance, an appropriate membrane can be selected. For example, Grade C1 (lower salt rejection and higher flux) membrane is suitable for reuse of treated sewage for irrigation usage. And Grade A1 (higher salt rejection and higher flux) membrane is preferable for reuse of treated sewage for boiler feed water usage.

In addition, the recovered RO membranes can reduce membrane disposal and contribute to SDGs. Membrane life extension will promote waste reduction of old membrane (GOAL12) and less production of new membrane will lead carbon footprint reduce (GOAL13). Absolutely, it will also result in inexpensive safe water can supply to more people (GOAL6).

In order to promote the reuse of used RO membranes, information on the membranes including their performance, is very useful for new users to fulfil their intended purpose.

This standard is a guidance of grading of recovered RO membranes based on their performance, does not specify any method of recovery processes
