Revision of BS 6349-8:2007 Code of practice for the design of Vehicle Ro-Ro ramps, linkspans and Sea Port Boarding Bridges

Scope

Review the content in light of current industry practices within the industry and experience of the document users for the past 13 years.

Update existing clauses / references that refer to obsolete Standards and Codes of Practice.

Add new sections where applicable.

Amend the graphics to a modern format.

Purpose

BS6349-8 was published in April 2007 prior to several key Eurocodes being released that are relevant to the design of steel structures.  It is important that a structural review is undertaken, and a comparison made in defined areas such as HRo and footbridge loading with current Eurocodes.

Currently BS6349-8 does not include rules on independent design checks by a third party, this needs to be addressed along with providing guidance as to how this should be achieved.

Several British Standards and are referred to in the document which are now withdrawn and / or superseded.

Key drivers, i.e. safety, new legislation and/or standards (will it provide support for the implementation of existing standards)

Safety in design – implement thorough independent design checks for all vehicle linkspans and sea port boarding bridges.

Align to latest British Standards – review and implement change if required.

Current working practices and modern port equipment needs to be acknowledged within the revised document.
