ISO/TC 85/SC 5 - ISO/NP 6863 Preparation of Plutonium and Uranium spikes for Isotope Dilution Mass Spectrometry (IDMS)

Scope

This method applies to the preparation and validation of the spikes used for the measurement of the concentration of uranium and/or plutonium in input solutions of irradiated Magnox and light water reactor fuels (boiling water reactor or pressurized water reactor), in final products at spent-fuel reprocessing plants and in feed and products of MOX and uranium fuel fabrication by isotope dilution mass spectrometry (IDMS).

Purpose

Isotope Dilution mass spectrometry (IDMS) is used to analyse plutonium and uranium for safeguards of nuclear fuel materials. To measure plutonium and uranium by IDMS, reference materials which called spikes are needed. Although the spike preparation method is described as Annex in ISO 8299, it is very limited and it has been more than 20 years since it was created. Therefore, this document, which is replaced ISO 8299 Annex A, have been created as an independent ISO standard for spike preparation and have include latest technique of spike preparation.
