When the solar radiation reaches the surface of the coating film on the roof, most of it is converted into heat, and the heat is transferred to the indoor side to promote the consumption of cooling energy in summer.
Paints that have the function of reflecting, insulating, or radiating this heat from the surface of the coating film on the roof in some way are generally called heat-shielding paints. Even with the above three types of products, most of the heat-shielding function is often due to reflection.
In recent years, some products have been marketed as heat-shielding paints with unique functions, which have not been scientifically verified.
In 2015, the Japan Paint Manufacturers Association and the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry developed a device that can measure the heat-shielding performance as heat energy passing through the coating film in order to realize a sound heat-shielding paint market formation. At the same time, a new measurement method that can evaluate the heat-shielding performance of all coating films was established as a new national standard JIS K 5603 (2017).
The Japan Paint Manufacturers Association (JPMA) launched a voluntary management system in 2018 to measure the solar irradiation penetration ratio of commercially available heat- shielding paints using this measuring instrument and disclose the value as heat-shielding paint performance. By increasing consumer awareness of this system, a healthy market for heat-shielding paints can be realized.
Product un-healthiness in the global heat-shielding paint market is similar to that in Japan.
Therefore, it is considered that the IS standardization of this measurement method can contribute to the soundness of the global heat-shielding paints market.
