ISO/PWI 13482 - Robotics - Safety requirements for service robots

Scope

This standard specifies the safety requirements for service robots used in personal and professional/commercial applications. The service robots concerned, and the extent to which hazards, hazardous situations or hazardous events are covered, are indicated in this standard.

This safety standard considers the conditions for physical human-robot contact to formulate safety requirements for service robots. It includes additional information on the functional safety for service robots.

This standard is not intended to cover robots used in industrial applications and medical applications.

Purpose

Robots and robotic devices in service applications require close human-robot interaction and collaborations, as well as physical human-robot contact. Considering such features, ISO 13482:2014 was developed to specify the safety requirements for personal care robots for the first time in 2014. Since then, service robot markets have been growing extensively and segmented in various robot types. Each robot type has unique features and particular sources of hazards. At the time of first publication of ISO 13482 in 2014, the service robot market was at its early stage hence experiences for the real world applications of service robots were limited. Therefore, sufficient attention was not paid to such robot type-specific requirements. Moreover, the requirements in ISO 13482:2014 did not fully reflect the limits of reality of the robot parts market, which are essential for implementation of the safety requirements. Accordingly, this standard will revise the current ISO 13482 and will develop the typespecific and detailed safety requirements for market-relevant service robots. In developing this revised standard, experiences gained over the ISO 13482:2014 certification processes by several robot manufacturers, will be fully exploited and the limits of the robot parts market will be reflected. Thus, the revised ISO 13482 will clearly state the realistic and type-specific safety requirements for each robot type so to benefit the service robot markets.
