Scope
4D printing has been identified by the CEN-CENELEC Technical Board as an emerging innovation breakthrough with standardization opportunities.
4D Printing is achieved by using Additive Manufacturing to produce freeform components and products using stimuli-responsive or smart materials. It has real-world applications in health, energy, and infrastructure sectors. This year (2021), CSIRO demonstrated the successful print of a Nitinol (Ni-Ti) self-expanding heart stent. To fully capitalise on the growth of this technology, accurate representation and communication of 4D Printed parts needs to be considered in terms of Additive Manufacturing requirements and Technical Product Specification. To date, there are no means of reliably communicating the performance of 4D Printed parts.
BSI would like to form a national panel as a multi-disciplinary / multi-stakeholder activity to scope the project, with a view of producing a preliminary work item proposal and high-level draft standardization document. Subsequently, this will be offered up to ISO and ISO-level committees will be involved, including but not limited to: ISO/TC 261 (Additive Manufacturing), ISO/TC 145 (Graphical Symbols), ISO/IEC JTC 1/WG 12 (3D Printing and Scanning), and ISO/TC 10 (Technical Product Documentation).
