ISO/TC 172/SC 5 N 951, ISO/NP 19012-4 Microscopes -- Designation of microscope objectives -- Part 4: Polarization characteristics

Scope

This document specifies the use of the marking on objectives for polarization microscope, and defines measurands and measurement procedures of polarization characteristics of the objectives for qualitative polarization imaging. These measurements are defined on the image plane of the objective lens.

This marking is consistent with ISO 8578.

NOTE: This document does not apply to objectives exclusively used on stereomicroscopes.

Purpose

The new standard will enable users to compare different microscope objectives quantitatively with respect to their polarization characteristics prior to a purchase decision and chose an appropriate instrument according to their application. The standard also enables users to compare existing microscope objectives with each other or to track possible performance variations over time therefore assuring proper performance.

Currently no standard for polarization characteristics for microscope objective exists.
