61/6308/NP, PNW 61-6308 ED1 Household and similar electrical appliances - Safety - Particular requirements for commercial electric washing machines

Scope

This Part 2 of IEC 60335-1 deals with safety of electrically operated commercial washing machines. It has been prepared based on IEC 60335-1 Ed. 5-2. Alignment with IEC 60335-1 Ed.6 will be done at PT level once the NP will be approved.

This proposal also does not include the latest decisions taken by IEC TC61 in the webmeet ing Series I 2021 when discussing proposals from MT32 for appliances for commercial use, in particular as far use in areas open to the public is concerned. Also this matter will be covered at PT level once the NP will be approved.

This clause of Part 1 is replaced by the following:

This International Standard deals with the safety of electrically operated commercial washing machines, their rated voltage being not more than 250V for single phase and 480V for other appliances.

These appliances are not intended for household and similar purposes. They are used for commercial washing processes, for example in hotels, hospitals, restaurants, canteens and for appliances which are intended to be used in area open to the public, for example laundrettes, communal la undry rooms.

This standard also covers appliances making use of other energy sources. It does not cover requirements for these other energy sources or compressed air.

NOTE 101 Examples of typical installation premises of appliances that are within the scop e of this standard are:

- hotels (commercial washing process)

- hospitals (commercial washing process)

- restaurants (commercial washing process)

- canteens (commercial washing process)

- launderettes (open to the public)

- communal laundry rooms (open to the public)

- community, residence for elderly (open to the public)

These appliances are designed to be connected to hot and/or cold water supply. Appliances making use of steam or hot water for heating purposes are also within the scope of this s tandard.

The electrical part of appliances making use of other forms of energy is also within the scope of this standard.

As far as is practicable, this standard deals with the common hazards presented by these types of appliances. However, in general, it does not consider young children playing with the appliance.

a) Attention is drawn to the fact that:

– for appliances intended to be used in vehicles or on board ships or aircraft, additional requirements may be necessary;

– in many countries additional requirements are specified by the national health authorities, the national authorities responsible for the protection of labour, the national water supply authorities and similar authorities;

– in many countries, additional requirements are specified for appliances incorporating pressurized parts;

– for appliances having additional functions (e.g. drying function), other standards are also applicable.

This standard does not apply to:

a) appliances designed exclusively for industrial purposes (ISO 10472-2),

b) appliances intended to be used in locations where special conditions prevail, such as the presence of a corrosive or explosive atmosphere (dust, vapour or gas).

c) washing machines appliances for household and similar use (IEC 60335-2-7). PURPOSE AND JUSTIFICATION

Purpose

Commercial washing machines are widely used, for example, in hotels, hospitals, laundrettes, but at IEC level these appliances are not covered by any specific product standard (apart from IEC 60335-2-7 that however is intended for appliances for household use). At European level a standard on this subject was published (EN50571) and the proposal is, starting from it, to develop an IEC standard for these appliances and allow for them the use of the worldwide IECEEE scheme and relevant CB Certificates. NOTE: if this proposal will be accepted, the same activity will be then ext ended (2 others specifics NPs requests will be submitted) also to commercial electric spin extractors and to commercial electric tumble dryers that are used in the same field and are commonly used in combination with washing machines.
