ISO/TC 38/SC 23 N 692, ISO/PWI 5688 Textiles--Synthetic filament yarn--Test method for crimp contraction properties of textured yarn

Scope

This document specifies test method for crimp properties of synthetic textured filament yarn. Two ways for crimp development are provided: hot air process and hot water process. It is applicable to synthetic textured filament yarn.

Purpose

Purpose: Synthetic textured filament yarn are most widely used and abundant chemical fibres for civil textile materials. Because of good bulk/crimp performance, textured yarn are with extensive use in textile fabric, clothing and other fields. The fabric style featuring diverse applications need different bulk/crimp properties. Therefore, it is essential to develop global uniform test method for crimp properties of synthetic textured filament yarn.

Textured filament yarn tend to crimp under certain conditions. After crimp revealed, the length of fibres changed due to contraction. The variations in lengths were measured, before and after light loading or heavy loading.

Crimp contraction and other indicators were calculated in order to study the crimp properties. Crimp properties are extremely important quality indexes of textured synthetic filament yarn, reflecting the degree of deformation and stability.

There is no ISO standard to test crimp properties of textured yarn. In order to facilitate production guidance, quality control and market normalization, it is practically necessary to develop the international standard.

Justification:

After texturing processes, the textured filament yarn has bulk/crimp properties because of actual/latent crimp. Crimp could be developed by thermal treatment.

After crimp revealed, observing changes of fibre length in a certain stressed time under different tensions, bulk/crimp properties are to be studied.

Thus, crimp properties are conventional test item for textured synthetic filament yarn. It is closely related to the design of fabric and the quality of the finished product. As to ensure the quality and style of fabrics, manufacturers need to choose those textured yarn with appropriate and uniform crimp properties.

There are related test methods in many countries and regions. But the scope of application, test condition, test procedures and the indicators for characterization are different.

This standard is developed to focus on drawn textured and bulk textured yarn and just test method for crimp properties.

The application scope is clear and the content is concise.
