BS 6349-1-1:2013 Maritime works. General. Code of practice for planning and design for operations

Scope

BS6349-1-1 was issued in 2013 and provides recommendations on general criteria and operational and environmental aspects relevant to the planning, design, construction and maintenance of maritime structures and facilities. It is applicable to coastal, nearshore, estuarine and inland marine facilities for safe navigation, berthing, mooring, loading unloading and servicing of ships, barges etc. It is also applicable to other civil infrastructure works at the waterfront or coastal margin.

The scope of the application of the new revision/edition remains unchanged except for explicit reference to application for aspects of floating LNG storage and re-gasification units (“FSRUs”) moored long term in nearshore or port environments.

Purpose

The 2013 revision was initiated some 10 years ago in the early stage of the revision of the previous BS6349 into separate sub-parts (BS6349-1-1; BS6349-1-2: BS6349-1-3; BS6349-1-4). Other related parts of BS6349 have also been updated subsequent to the 2013 revision of Part 1-1. Now, there is a need to update Part 1-1 to reflect changes to the rest of BS6349, a large number of changes and updates in normative references and other trends in design, operation and maintenance including digitization and sustainability considerations for maritime works.

Key drivers, i.e., safety, new legislation and/or standards (will it provide support for the implementation of existing standards).

• New and updated normative standards and informative guidelines (especially from PIANC, OCIMF, SIGTTO etc) and latest Met office UK climate projections.

• Changes in sizes and characteristics of shipping, especially large container ships and LNG carriers

• Application to new types of floating LNG terminals incorporating long term moorings and aspects of use of LNG as a marine fuel.

• Need for update of health and safety recommendations, taking into account issues arising from other parts of BS6349 since 2013.

• Need to enhance sustainability provisions, especially in connection with UK targets reduction in greenhouse gas emissions targets

• Addition of guidance with respect to BIM and digitisation (BS ISO 19650)
