Scope
The published BS 8895 parts 1, 2 and 3 give recommendations for the processes by which material efficiencies may be maximised through the design, stages of a construction project, in line with the stages 0-4 of the RIBA Plan of Work.
This proposal is in two parts:
• To complete the recommendations covering implementation and completion (RIBA Plan of Work stages 5-7: construction, handover, and use).
• To combine the published BS 8895 parts 1, 2 and 3 and the new RIBA Plan of Work stages 5-7 recommendations into one consolidated standard.
The standard will give recommendations on
• the process by which design and project teams seek to maximize material efficiency through design through the Strategic Definition and Preparation and Brief stages of a project.
• the processes, information exchanges and responsibilities for design teams to incorporate into projects at the Concept Design and Spatial Coordination stages of a building project.
• the implementation of actions and outcomes from the spatial coordination investigations, on optimizing material efficiency in production information, such as information models, detailed drawings and material specification and coordination of technical design work undertaken by architects; structural and building services engineers; consultants; and specialist sub-contractors and/or suppliers, as appropriate.
• the implementation of material resource efficiency during construction, handover and use stages of buildings.
Purpose
The objective of BS 8895 is to encourage material resource efficiency by:
a) reducing the use of virgin material;
b) waste prevention through designing out waste;
c) diverting material from landfill; and
d) encouraging more consideration of recycled material, reuse of material and recyclability.
As appropriate please comment on both parts of the scope of the proposed work.
