ISO/TC 107/SC 9 N 62, ISO/PWI 4500 PVD MoS2-based coatings for solid-lubricating purposes -- specifications and test methods

Scope

This document specifies the property specifications and test methods for PVD MoS2-based solid lubricating coatings for precision optical instrument, high/low/cycling temperature, radiation environment, spacecrafts and other engineering applications. Engineering applications are defined as those in which the coating essentially serves a non-decorative purpose.

Purpose

PVD MoS2-based solid lubricating coatings have been vastly used worldwide in various applications where liquid/grease lubrication are either undesired or incompetent, such as precision optical instrument, high/low/cycling temperature, radiation environment, spacecrafts, etc. However, the lack of an international standard on the specifications of property evaluation methodology, results in products/components containing PVD MoS2-based solid lubricating coatings from different processors/manufacturers can hardly be compared. Appropriate property specifications for PVD MoS2- based solid lubricating coatings are needed to solve this problem. The motivation of this standard is to prescribe the measurement and evaluation of the coating thickness and uniformity, coating-substrate adhesion, hardness /elastic modulus, tribological properties (such as friction and wear performance) both in ambient air and in vacuum of PVD MoS2-based solid lubricating coatings. These property specifications are considered to be useful both in the evaluation of PVD MoS2-based solid lubricating coatings and in the comparison of such coatings from different batches and/or different processors.
