ISO/WD TR 4584/NP Amd 1 Improvement in the guideline for UA testing/design of accelerated lifecycle testing (ALT) for UAS/Subsystem/ components -- Amendment 1: Standard Practice of Accelerated Lifecycle Testing (ALT) for UAS/Subsystem/ Components

Scope

This standard focuses on appropriate ALT plan design and development process and a series of activities required during ALT process based on failure mechanisms are presented. It also reviews the development of optimal ALT plan design by investigating the engineering issues possibly noticed during the ALT implementation and plans to provide guidelines on developing ALT process for engineers.

Product reliability improvement requires holistic approach. Since just one trial of any reliability activities does not help much to achieve the goal of product reliability, the plan for developmental improvement process needs to be designed in timely manner. There are various activities for reliability such as FMEA, failure and root-cause analysis, design for reliability (DfR), ALT, regression analysis, failure rate sampling, and statistical analysis, etc in this standard.

Purpose

The unmanned aerial system (UAS) has become a staple of the mission options available to the private business as well as government or military organization, with its roles and capabilities increasing along with utilization. However, this increase in utilization has been accompanied by significantly higher failure rates when compared to conventional airframes. The general aviation mishap rate is about 1 per 100,000 flight hours, while military UAV systems have experienced failure rates 2 orders of magnitude higher, nearly 1 per 1000 flight hours. By another metric, some UAV systems have a failure rate of 25%. New product has no record existed for life expectancy or failure information under normal flight conditions.

Reliability testing is required to verify failure rates prior to product release. This accelerated stress test, one of reliability tests, is intended to submit as new proposal for reliability design verification because it is economical as well as time-saving without loss of generality.
