This International Standard applies when a need for CAAS has been established. As a consequence the need for CAAS is not covered by this International Standard but information about the need for CAAS is given in annex C. As an indication, this standard is applicable to all operations with fissionable materials in which inadvertent criticality may occur (ISO 1709) and cause the exposure of personnel to unacceptable radiation doses and when a significant benefit due to CAAS implementation is expected. This International Standard does not include details of administrative steps, which are considered as prerogatives of the management system (ISO 14943 for details).
Details of nuclear accident dosimetry and personnel exposure evaluations are not within the scope of this International Standard.
This International Standard is concerned with gamma and neutron radiation rate-sensing systems. Specific detection criteria can be met with integrating systems or with systems detecting either neutron or gamma radiation, and analogous considerations apply.
This revision aims at improving this standard by:
- Modernization to adapt to modern practices;
- Update and clarification of interaction with other standards (particularly IEC60860 and other ISO standards relevant to the nuclear criticality safety field);
- Improve usability of the standard, through the expansion of notions such as placement of probes or other elements, as well as expanded annexes helping to solve the question of CAAS need
