ISO/TC 22 N 4037, ISO/NP 5474-4 - Electrically propelled road vehicles - Functional requirements and safety requirements for power transfer - Part 4: Magnetic field wireless power transfer - Safety and interoperability requirements

Scope

This document defines the requirements and operation of the on-board vehicle equipment that enables magnetic field wireless power transfer (MF-WPT) for electric vehicles.

This document addresses the following aspects for an EV device:

— safety requirements;

— transferred power and power transfer efficiency;

— ground clearance of the EV device;

— functionality with associated off-board systems under various conditions and independent of manufacturer;

— test procedures.

EV devices that fulfil the requirements in this document are intended to operate with supply devices that fulfil the MF-WPT related requirements in the IEC 61980 series. 

Purpose

The importance of electrically propelled vehicles to reduce emissions in traffic is unbroken. Continuously new technologies are being developed and new use cases are added with the increasing spread of electric vehicles.

The state of the art of EV power transfer including wireless, AC and DC charging as well as reverse power transfer is evolving rapidly. Even during the final stage of the development of ISO 17409 (2. Edition) and ISO 19363 new features and requirements appeared in the market which demands for an early revision. Additional new topics such as automated connection and special requirements for commercial vehicles are now ready for standardization.

The new project considers to merge the standards for conductive power transfer and wireless power transfer into one standard in order to benefit from commonalities and to improve harmonization. To support readability and application of the standard the new project will be structured into 5 parts:

Part 1: General

Part 2: AC power transfer

Part 3: DC power transfer

Part 4: Wireless power transfer

Part 5: Automatic conductive connection

The new structure not only supports the user but also better allows experts to focus on their area of expertise as well. Another result of the new structure will be lean documents which allow for individual revision in the future while other parts can remain stable.

Part 4 focusses on wireless power transfer that allows automated charging and therefore serves as prerequisite for autonomous driving and autonomous parking of electrically propelled road vehicles. In addition, it increases the charging convenience for the end-user and thus is seen as a further driver of electric mobility.

The document will address the relevant safety requirements and will provide confidence to manufacturers developing and producing such systems. Interoperability is the second key aspect. The document will be developed based on ISO19363 but will align with the (then) current status of IEC61980 series that provides requirements for the infrastructure side.

The proposed deliverable is intended to provide requirements for conformity assessment which might in future be applied as reference for technical regulations
