The design of mooring and fendering of vessels is critical to the safe and efficient operation of ports and terminals. In the past 5 years since publication more information on actual berthing velocities has been collected by PIANC WG145, and this section should be updated to reflect this.
In addition the knowledge on the reliability of fenders and bollards has increased and this should be reflected in the standard. BS6349 Part 1-4 (Materials) is currently being updated to cover fenders and bollards, and Part 4 should be revised to suit, including more information on testing.
The calculation for the berthing energy for end fenders should include an added mass factor; the existing formula is slightly unconservative.
Key drivers, i.e. safety, new legislation and/or standards (will it provide support for the implementation of existing standards)
PIANC is about to publish WG145, Berthing velocity analysis of seagoing vessels over 30Kdwt. The berthing velocity is the most important factor when assessing the energy that fender systems have to absorb.
