ISO/TC 268 N 487, ISO/NP 37124 Sustainable cities and communities -- Guidance on the use of ISO 37120 series of standards for cities -- ISO 37120, ISO 37122 and ISO 37123

Scope

This international standard provides guidance on how to use and implement the ISO 37120 series of standards.

The ISO 37120 series of standards which includes ISO 37120 Indicators for Sustainable Cities, ISO 37122 Indicators for Smart Cities and ISO 37123 Indicator for Resilient Cities, defines and establishes a set of definitions and methodologies for a set of indicators to steer and measure performance of city services and quality of life, smart city development and resilience planning. The ISO 37120 series of standards provide support to cities in achieving their goals towards sustainable development with indicators for measuring smart city developments and risk assessments for building smart, resilient and sustainable cities.

This guidance document is intended for any users interested in implementing and using ISO 37120, ISO 37122 and ISO 37123. The ISO 37120 series of standards are applicable to any city, municipality or local government that undertakes to measure its performance in a comparable and verifiable manner, irrespective of size or location.

Purpose

Since the publication of ISO 37120 in 2014 and its subsequent 2018 revision, cities around the world have been implementing this standard. The publication of ISO 37120 have quickly become the international reference point for sustainable cities. In addition, cities have requested the development of two new standards, one on indicators for smart cities and another on indicators for resilient cities to support their sustainability efforts. WG2 has undertaken this work to develop two additional standards, ISO 37122 Indicators for Smart Cities and ISO 37123 Indicators for Resilient Cities.

Both new standards, ISO 37122 and ISO 37123 are scheduled to be published this year. Both ISO 37122 and ISO 37123 are meant to be used in conjunction with ISO 37120 as it is the core standard for indicators on sustainable cities in the ISO 37120 Series of Standards for City Indicators. In line with the principles and values of TC 268, WG2 developed these two new standards with the view of supporting cities in their sustainability efforts with smart and resilient as a means to sustainability.

This guidance document is intended to support cities in understanding how to implement the ISO 37120 series of standards. As both ISO 37122 and ISO 37123 are to be used in conjunction with ISO 37120, users will require assistance on how to implement these standards in a complementary and parallel way. WG2 has undertaken to ensure the three standards align across key themes repeated across all three standards.
