Where necessary, special requirements can be given for particular engine applications. The requirements of this document are not intended to enable an engine to operate during or after a fire.
This document covers reciprocating internal combustion engines for land and marine use, excluding engines used to explosive atmosphere, road vehicles and aircraft. This document can be applied to engines used to propel small craft and for other applications where no suitable International Standard for fire protection on reciprocating internal combustion engines exists. For engine applications excluded above, this document can be used as the basis for engine application standards.
The development of the internal combustion engine technology brings more fire risks. The development trends include the wide application of gas fuel, plastic and rubber parts, the increase of electrical components and exhaust gas after-treatment system. This proposal addresses these risks and replenishes the technical requirements in the original standard. The justifications are as follows.
1. This proposal covers additional applied fields, including engine used to propel agricultural tractors, road construction and earth-moving machines. 2. This proposal updates the cited standards into the latest name.
3. This proposal covers requirements on flammable liquids and gases, including natural gas.
4. This proposal covers requirements on flame-retardant characteristics of non-metal components, including hose and plastic components.
5. This proposal covers requirements on ground connection and flame retardant of electrical and electronic components
6. This proposal covers requirements on temperature of the after-treatment system for exhaust gas.
