ISO/TC 39/SC 4 - ISO/NP 19085-18 Woodworking machines — Safety — Part 18: Log band sawing machines

Scope

This document gives the safety requirements and measures for log band sawing machines designed to cut solid wood hereinafter referred to as “machines” and with the following characteristics:

- loading and/or unloading by mechanical devices under manual control;

- unloading of sliced timbers by hand is optionally possible;

- manual control of the cutting process;

- automatic control of continuous repetition of the cutting processes is optionally possible.

It deals with all significant hazards, hazardous situations and events as listed in Clause 4, relevant to the machines, when operated, adjusted and maintained as intended and under the conditions foreseen by the manufacturer including reasonably foreseeable misuse. Also, transport, assembly, dismantling, disabling and scrapping phases have been taken into account.

This document does not apply to:

1) machines driven by combustion engines or power take offs (PTO);

2) table band saws and band re-saws.

NOTE Table band saws and band re-saws are covered by ISO 19085-16:2020.

This document does not deal with hazards related to:

a) the combination of a single machine being used with any other machine (as part of a line);

b) automatic loading and/or unloading;

c) any other machining processes (e.g. milling and sawing) related to associated machines or cutting devices, e.g. circular saws.

(These machines usually have pre-cutting circular saws to avoid excessive wear of the band saw blade. Should we cover these saws?)

This document is not applicable to machines intended for use in potentially explosive atmospheres or to machines manufactured prior to the date of its publication.

Purpose

Currently no international standards on safety of woodworking machines exist. Regional (EN) standards on this subject exist and are being used as blueprint for similar, but not identical, national standards in several countries. In order to avoid diverging requirements a set of international standards on woodworking machine safety is imminent.
