ISO/TC 107/SC 9 N 34, ISO/NP 24674 Method and requirement of plasma nitriding and follow-up PVD hard coatings on cold-work mould steels

Scope

This document specifies the procedure and requirements for plasma nitriding and follow-up PVD hard coatings intended for use in cold-work moulds. It provides necessary information, such as the original structure of nitriding steels, process control, nitrided layer, surface quality and adhesion of duplex PVD coatings, to create an optimal combination of high performance.

Cold-work mould steels in this standard mainly refer to forming, fine blanking and powder compacting moulds in automotive application. PVD hard coatings mainly include the transition metal nitride coatings and diamond-like carbon coating exhibiting high hardness and toughness, low friction coefficient and roughness.

Purpose

The purpose of this proposal is to start an international standardization process to prescribe the evaluation of the method and requirement of plasma nitriding and follow-up PVD hard coatings on coldwork mould steels in automotive application.

Numerous automotive moulds work under extreme conditions such as heavy loads and harsh environments in their usage period and these conditions shorten the service life. Duplex coating with a plasma nitriding layer beneath the PVD hard coating has better support for the coating layer and therefore further increase the performance and mould life, especially for forming high strength steel application. However, the properties of duplex PVD coatings do not show improvement in every plasma nitriding conditions. The structure, mechanical and compositional characteristics of nitriding layers have a strong influence on the overall performance of duplex coatings. A formal specification is needed for the manufacture all over the world. Accurate target of the properties of duplex PVD coating should be given to examine the products. There is no standard to qualify the composition, structure and properties of plasma nitriding before coating deposition yet, which limits the further development of duplex PVD coatings. Thus, the motivation of this standard is to provide the method and requirement of duplex treatment on cold-work mould steels including the microstructure, surface condition, nitrided layer depth and performances of plasma nitriding and PVD coatings.

Therefore, the specification of plasma nitriding and follow-up PVD hard coatings are strongly required from not only suppliers but also end users. A scientific measurement and definition should be provided to determine the type and properties of duplex PVD coatings in this proposal in the future.
